Democracy & Civic Engagement

  • We believe that our collective power is multiplied by the ways we show up in caring relationship for each other - during and beyond election seasons or legislative sessions.

As we advocate for policies that protect and better all of us, we organize to fill in the gaps with community care.

We believe:

  • For over 200 years, the majority of eligible U.S. voters were white men. Exclusion by law and by force was the standard until massive social and protest movements pushed politicians to eliminate barriers to voting that prevented women and people of color from participating in our democracy.

The legacy of voter suppression in the United States is deep, but our ancestors’ legacy of resistance is more powerful. We vote, organize, and heal together to continue their work.

Our work

  • After maintaining Minnesota’s Eighth Congressional district by 26 people, the Minnesota Council of Foundations and Voices for Racial Justice, along with our community partners, are motivated to build on the momentum of the 2020 Census and community-focused redistricting work to support a long-term Census and democracy infrastructure and an inclusive democracy that works for everyone.

  • Our stories have the ability to crack open and transform our future. Voices for Racial Justice is committed to sharing stories of collective care and power, and offering spaces for meaning-making, connection, and action.

Voter resources

  • We know that racial justice is the work of generations, and that we won’t win everything through policy and legislation - and we also know that voting is a privilege, and law-making is an essential tool for our movements.

We vote on behalf of our loved ones who can’t, to reduce harm to the communities who are most impacted by inequity.
