Community safety is a collective responsibility
Every person deserves to live and travel freely without being targeted for the color of their skin or the language they speak. Every person deserves to feel safe and supported in the people and places they call home. Voices for Racial Justice is united in disappointment and anger at the United States Supreme Court’s recent decision to legalize racial profiling in ICE arrests.
“The court has opened the door to profiling practices that will expose millions of Latinos to harassment, wrongful detention, and fear in their daily lives. Whether at bus stops, workplaces, or public spaces, Latino communities will face the risk of being treated as suspects simply because of who they are or what they look like.”
Our community’s safety is our collective responsibility, and there are so many ways that we can each continue to show up powerfully, and together.
Defend our immigrant communities - ways to take local action:
In Minneapolis, we have the opportunity to take real action and bolster protections for our immigrant communities by strengthening our local separation ordinance - which prevents Minneapolis police from collaborating with ICE. Every city council seat - and the mayor’s office - is on the ballot in this fall’s election. Pay attention to candidates’ plans to protect our immigrant neighbors. Learn who’s running to represent you and spread the word with your friends, family, and neighbors.
Unidos MN is hosting a series of Legal Observer Trainings across Minnesota and Wisconsin this September. Find an event close to you, and learn how to meaningfully show up for immigrant communities.
Hope is a constant discipline, and we can’t practice it without meaningful action. We can build the world we want to live in every day through our interactions with our friends and families and neighbors. When each of us finds our role in the fight for justice and liberation, our communities are safe, sustained, and powerful. Join us in taking care and taking action.
